There is a very interesting story about Sri Dulasi devi in 9th skandham in Devi Mahapuranam.
Thulasi born to a king named Suradha and the queens name is Madavi.
She was very beautiful and it is said that she was Sri Lakshmi devis aspect. Once grownup she ardently desired to be the consort of Sri Narayana and was in deep penance for over 1000 years. (Here one should not think how can possible to live 1000 year penance? the celestial bodies can be done ) At last Bramma the creator appeared in front of her and told “ Tulasi you have taken birth to marry Sri Narayanas aspect Named Sanka-cudan then at last you will go to Sri Krishna” Brhama disappeared, so accordingly she married Sanga-choodan, an aspect of Narayana but of 'asura' descent. He was sage like and very pious. He established a great empire covering this world and the heavens. All 'devas' panicked at his ascendancy and prayed to Rudhra to destroy him...
The result is a battle between Rudhra and Sanga-chooda. Rudhra can not beat him because of the armour protecting Sanga-chooda. also the power of Tulasi's virtuous quality and devotion to her husband Mid-way in the war Vishnu portrayed as an old man and with his tricky plan he grabbed Sanga-chooda 's protective armour. Then he changed as Sanga-chooda and went to Tulasi and deceived her modesty. her virtuous quality gone Sanga-chooda lost and he looses his life in the war.
Tulasi realized that the person who got intimate with her was not her husband Sanga-chooda. but Sri Narayana... She arose terrific angrily cursed Narayana that he would become a stone - a hill in the earth.Subsequently Narayana shows his true self and explains to Tulasi that he came to her in the garb of her husband only in answer to her penance earlier praying to become his consort. However Narayana said that It is my curse that you will become as river and a plant once I become a hill at that time the gigantic beetles with heavy and iron like teeth will make holes and poke with it's teeth cut the hill and it make design like wheel like my sudharsanam in various types those are all my aspects. (1) If there is 4 wheels and surprisingly surrounded looks like vanamala form that stone the rainy seasoned cloud in color that saligramam is called Lakshmi Narayana (2) If it is without vanamala design with 4 wheels the same color is called Lakshmi Janarthanam (3) Saligramam with two holes without vanamala 4 wheels the rainy season cloud coloured it is called Raghunathar (4) very small with only 2 wheels is called Vamanan (5) small with 2 wheels is called Sritharar (6) little big moderate in size stone without vanamalai with two wheels is called Dhamodharan (7) neither big nor small middle sized with 7 wheels and with jewelery mark is called Rajarajeswarar It gives Rajabhogam (8)Rainy seasonal cloud like colour little a long and big in size with14 wheels this kind is called Aadhisesher if one has this kind and do puja he will have righteous nature, health wealth, all time happiness and gods realization. (9) the round in shape and bright sky in color and medium size with two wheels is called Madusoodhanar (10) the same round in shape with one wheel is called Sudharshanam (11)the same round in shape just curtained light faded like wheel is called Sudhadar (12) same round in shape just horse like shaped 2 wheels is called Hayagreever (13) The same shape with scarily hole with two wheels is called Narashimer (14) The same type 2 wheels with Haram mark is called Lakshmi Narasimer (15) The same round in shape the 2wheels in the edge and bright of the hole is called Vasudever (16)The same rounded shape and accurately sharp and bright 1 wheel and many tiny dents in the same hole bright and rainy cloud in color is called Pratyumner (17)The same shape and color 2 wheels in middle of the holes with blown edge is called Sangarshana moorty . All salagramams are vishnu swaroopam once it falls in the kentaki river it will join with Lakshmi so If one do pooja with salagramam they will have all sort of wealth and long healthy life. Another important thing is the Shankam and Saligramam kept in close and always tulasi should be on the saligramam and Shankam. All this three should not be separated.
Tulasi became the river 'Kandaki' in the earth and Narayana also became a hill according to tulasi's curse. For their association to be more permanent,.. . People all over the would keep these at home and worship them as a representation of Narayana
