The Great Master's homage

The carnatic music world had meet many composers from Sri PurandharaDasar to till than immense of grand masters poured their compositions like a torrential rain fall.. Now I would wish to share another grate composer even now popularly musicians singing his grate masterly compositions in sanskrit . This great master's ancestors from Viranchipuram village, this village is close to Kanchipuram . They belong to Dikshitar sect and are regarded as heretical Sri Vidya cult (Devi Upasakas)and from Tamil brahmin family..Then for some unexpected reason they left Kanchi and moved toThiruvarur.
This is from carnatic musically great famous family . As such SriMuthuswamyDikshitar born in such a solid solicits family, .his father's name is Sri Ramaswamy didshitar he was a veena  player, and also he composed so many Raga lakshana krithis on Lord Tyagarajaswamy. And mother's name is Subbalakshmi ammal. MuthuswamiDikshitar was born in Tiruvarur He was named after the temple deity,Muttukumaraswamy; legend has it that he was born after his parents prayed for a child in the Vaideeswaran temple. He had two younger brothers Baluswami, Chinnaswami and a sister Balambal.
MuthuswamiDikshitar ,lived nearly 60 years and 7 months (March 24, 1775– October 21, 1835).. He was a poet cum composer and is one of the Trinity of Carnatic music. His compositions, are around 500,all are typical slower speed (sowkacalam) and His mudra is Guruguha. He also had composed some of his Kritis in Manipravalam. (a small note about meaning of Manipravalam)
Itis said Manipravalam was a literary style used in medieval conventional type, which is a compound of Tamil (early Malayalam and Sanskrit Manipravalam is termed a mixture of Sanskrit and Tamil ) literally means ruby-coral, where Mani means ruby in Tamil while Pravalam means Coral in Sanskrit. Malayalam is referred to as ruby and Sanskrit as coral.
When Mutuswamy dikshitar was 16 years old he Learnt sanskrit, and vedas,Kaviya ("literary meaning composition, poem.") alankara Drama sasthiras in sanskrit and plays. .His father was the first teacher for Veena lesson., and the same age he got married
While he was still in his teens, his father sent him on a pilgrimage with a religious saint named Chidambaranada yogi to gain musical and philosophical knowledge. Over the course of this pilgrimage, he visited many places in northern places and acquired a broad outlook, that incidents reflected in many of his compositions . During their stay in Varanasi his guru Chidambaranatha Yogi, initiated Srividya sodasakshari mahajapam and presented a unique Veena. yogi lived for some months and then he attained moksham . The samadhi of Chidambaranatha Yogi can still be seen in Sri Chakra Lingeshwar temple at the Hanuman ghat at Varanasi.
According to legend, his guru asked Muthuswami to visit Thuruttani . There, while he was immersed deep in meditation, an old man appeared and asked him to open his mouth. and dropped a sugar candy into his mouth and disappeared. As he opened his mouth, he had a vision of the god Subramanyam and Dikshitar burst forth into his first composition"Sri Nathadi Guruguho" in the Raga Mayamalavagowlai insanskrit ....This song praised the lord Subramanyam ..
He then went on a pilgrimage and composing songs on the temples god and goddess at Kanchipuram, Thiruvanamalai, Chidhambaram, Kalahasthi, before returning to Tiruvarur. He composed plenty of songs on respected deities.
MuthuswamiDikshitar succeeded mastery over the Veena, and the influence of Veena playing is evident in his compositions, particularly the Gamagams. In his kriti Balagopala,BairaviRagam Thalam aadhi he introduces himself as a Vainika Gayaki, ("a player of the veena ).. He experimented with the Violin, and among his disciples, name Vadivelu of the Thanjavur, and his brother BaluswamyDikshidar pioneered the use of violin in Carnatic music, even now the musicians accompanied violin when their music concerts..
On his return to Tiruvarur, he composed on every deity in the Tiruvarur temple complex including Lord Tyagaraja , the presiding deity is,Devi Nilotpalambal, , and the Devi Kamalambal an independent deity of high a tantric significance in the same temple complex. The wide range of philosopher's opinion the Thiruvarur temple is a shape of Sri Chakkara  and the deity Sri kamalambal is placed on the bindu chakkara (in dot) that is the reason why Dikshitar composed Navavarna krithis on Devi Kalambal. Sri Dikshitar him self a Sri Vidya upasakar. Therefore navavarna krithi born according to the Sri Cakkara procedure ..
Kamalamba Navavarana Krithis of Dikshitar are also considered to be 9 jewels by not only musicians but also to SriVidya Upasakas. These compositions show Dikshirtar's competence in Sanskrit language, his authority over various Ragas of Carnatic music and showed about SriChakra and its Avaranas. Though these compositions are nine in number yet , they are preceded by a Dyana krithi and succeeded by a  Mangala kriti. Total 11 krithis. It is believed that MuthuswamiDikshitars musical out pourings brought out the famous Navavarana kritis(songs). He has composed 9 kritis, which emphasize the secret of Sri vidya -also known as God’s science of the universe., energy, capacity, potentiality is three-fold; : iccha-shakti, jñanashakti, and kriya-shakti, respectively the energy called Will,Knowledge, and Action...

When he composed the famous Kamalamba Navavarnam cycle, The Goddess is the reference to the Divine Mother of the universe, ( the SupremeConsciousness.) The lyrics and the details are loaded with the mystical symbolism of the Vedantic (advaita) tradition and the Chakras of the human system are closely linked to the evolutionary aspects described in the compositions that mirrored the scholarly reach, musical depth and mystical significance of the composer.
Muthuswami Dikshitar’s devotional out pourings to Goddess Kamalaambika which took shape as the famou
s Navavarana Kirtanams(songs) make a treasure house of Carnatic music. Navavarana Puja to Sri Chakra is the foremost sadhana of SriVidya and Dikshitar’s songs give shape to it in words set to divine music. This all 11 krithis singing on the Navaratri puja with bhava(attitude),one will get the full benefit of formal Navavarna puja.
Musically, they are par excellence and the majestic sweep of well known Ragas(melodic forms) like Thodi,Kalyni,Kambothi,Sankarabharanam, Sahana,Anandhabairavi ,Punnagavarali, Bairavi Ghanta and Aahiri are well-known melodies .filled with exemplary Sahityas which proved to be the master pieces of his compositions .

These navavaranams were in all the nine declensions and are sung as a memorable event of Guruguha Jayanthi celebrated every year at Thiruvarur.... He also continued presenting to view the 9 planets of the Navagraha Krithis praising Navagrahas and their Sahityas of the songs reflect a profound knowledge of the Mantra and Jyodhisha Sastras. The Nilotbalamba jayadhi Ragam Narayana gowla Talam Misrachapu,,Neelotpalambikayam Ragam Poorvagowla Talam roopagam,Neelotbalambike ,Ragam Chaya gowla , talam roopagam like seven krithis is another classic set of his compositions
Dikshitar also undertook the project of composing in all the 72 melakartha ragas, there by providing a musical example for many rare and lost ragas. Also, he was the pioneer in composing samashti charanam krithis  in which the pallavi is followed by only one stanza,(unlike the conventional two). Dikshitar was a master of talam and is the only composer to have kritis in all the seven basic talas of theCarnatic scheme. Dikshitar shows his skill in Sanskrit by composing in all the five Lingas on praising five linga,s those are Anandhaeswarer,Asaleswarer, Hadakeswarer,Valmeegeswarer, and Sideswarer...Than 11 krithis set on Tyagarajer at Thiruvarur
For richness of Raga bhava quality of their philosophic contents and for the greatness of the sahitya, the songs of Dikshitar stand par beyond in excellence.

.On Deepavali day , in 1835, Dikshithar performed his pooja as usual and asked his students to sing the song "Meenakshi Me Mudam" in the raga Gamagakriya (Modern Poorvi kalyani) As his students sang the lines "Meena lochani pasa mochani" he raised his hands and saying "Sive Pahi" and left his mortal coil...His Samadhi is at Ettayapuram...
In this occasion we all remind the Mahan and pray for our knowledge and wisdom .
