Gorak
Nath was a yogi and he lived in 6th century.(Another account of
statement says he lived in 11th century ) The name Gorakhnath derives
from the medieval saint, Gorakshanath a famous yogi who travelled widely
all over India..
It is said that Lord Siva told to all Sivaganas that ”I am giving all my yogic power to GorakNathsha to teach & establish the knowledge of yoga and spread the magnificent exercise to the mankind in the word…and whoever practice yoga they will have a nice health and long life …
The Sanskrit word Siva is an adjective meaning is "pure “and also "The Auspicious One", The Lord is described as Maha yogi, who lives an ascetic life on Mount Kailash, as immersed in deep meditation…

The Nath tradition underwent its greatest expansion during the time of Gorakshanath. He produced a number of writings and even today is considered the greatest of the Naths. His very first writing book is called Laya yoga. Then he has written several books including the Goraksha Samhita, Goraksha Gita, Siddha Siddhanta Paddhati, Yoga Martanada, Yoga Siddhanta Paddhati, Yoga-Bija, Yoga Chintamani. He is believed to be the founder of the Nath Sampradaya and It is said Guru Gorakshnath had Nava Naths and 84 Siddhas (accomplished beings) as disciples, human forms created by his own yogic powers to spread his message of yoga and meditation to the world.
There is a district named after 'Gorakshnath' called Gorakhpur this place takes its name and fame from renowned, ascetic, A famous shrine 'Gorakhnath' was built in his honor on the same spot where he practiced austerities

The temple at Gorakhpur is said to contain the samadhi shrine (tomb) and prayer seat of Gorakshanath.
