We could have darshan of Sri Dhakshinamurty in Siva temples installed facing south that is when we go on the ciirucumambulatory path from the main Lord Siva sanctum sanctorum. He is Adi Guru.
Common literary meaning of Dakshinamurty is 'one who is facing in South direction . The great seer Ramana Maharshi, said : one meaning of Dakshina is efficient; another meaning is ‘in the heart on the right side of the body’; Amurthy ’means Formlessness' .
Sri Bhagavatha puranam in 4th chapter there is a description says vriddha sishya gurur yuva (old disciples and young Guru).
Further it says jnana is (the wise) always remain young. There is no youth,or old age. Sri Bhagavan Ramanar said in his description vriddha˜sishya,(old disciple) means that Sanaka and the others were old in actual age. Though they remain eternally young in their knowledge of wisdom,

There is an interesting story in the Siva Rahasyam says Dakshinamurty is one of the five (Murthys ) forms of Siva. It means that he is seated facing south in chin mudra the legend moves further Sanaka, Sanandana, Sanatkumara and Sanatsujata who are the four sons born from the mind of Brahma, learnt that they were brought in to existence to further the creation of the world, but they were not interested in the task, and sought only truth, knowledge and wandered in search of a Guru. Lord Siva sympathized  with those earnest seekers of sons of Brahma and lord Siva became as a young 5 years old boy and sat inthe south direction under a banyan tree in the silent state , as Dakshinamurthy with chinmudra... Sanaka and the others they acquired all kind of philosophical knowledge from lord's silent mode and attained Self-realization in his presence..
Dakshinamurti, shown with four arms. he is seated on a tiger skin under a banyan tree, facing the south. and surrounded by sages .
He is shown as seated with his right foot stamping on apasmaram (a demon of ignorance) and his left foot lies folded on his lap. . In his right upper arm holds a Damaru and left upper hand holds a flame; while in his lower right hand is shown in vyakhyana mudra,(The forefinger of his right hand is bent and touching the tip of his thumb.) The other three fingers are stretched apart. This symbolic and gesture is called a symbol of knowledge and wisdom. his lower left hand holds the scriptures.
Dakshinamurthy is described as being in the yogic state of deep meditation - and as a powerful form filling with ever flowing bliss and supreme cheer. Maharshi  Kardama sankara a mystic seer says that Dakshinamurthy means the superior of the unconditional bliss.
Sri Dakshinamurthy, in the significant of beliefs is regarded as the ultimate Guru - the embodiment of knowledge and the destroyer of ignorance .. It is said The Jnana Mudra is explained as the thumb is indicate the God and the forefinger is a man . It's meaning is a man should have faith in god.
The other three fingers stand for the three inherited impurities of man .arrogance, illusion and bad deeds of the past births those will vanish and have god's realization
Another account of legend says that the other three fingers symbolize the three states of life: Jagruti (Fully awake through senses and mind),Swapna (Sleep state - When the mind is awake) and Susukti (True-self- the senses and mind awareness of soul – Atma). self realization.

Dakshinamurthy is an aspect of Siva as a Satguru (teacher) of all kind of knowledge to the world. This aspect of Siva is the supreme of the ultimate Parabrahmam, and Knowledge. of Yoga, Vedas,Dance/Music, and Wisdom, and giving exposition on the Sastras and all kind of arts, and Meditation. He is time (Kala) who is teaching with his facing to the southern direction that he is ultimate divinity and thus he is beyond any worldly traditions. Lords worship is worshipping god of wisdom,
